Used Tesla Model 3 Battery Health Test: What Sellers and Buyers Need to Know
Somebody posts a Model 3 battery percentage in an owners group roughly every hour, and the replies split the same way every time. Half say that is completely normal. Half say that is terrible for the mileage. Both sound confident and neither cites anything.
The Model 3 is one of the most traded used EVs anywhere, which means this argument has real money attached to it. So here is what the actual benchmarks are, why the number on your screen might be wrong in either direction, and what each side of the deal should do about it.
What counts as normal Model 3 degradation?
The honest answer is that it depends far less on mileage than most people assume, and far more on which battery the car happens to have.
A Swedish used-EV marketplace, Carla, compiled 9,954 battery health tests carried out between 2022 and 2026, measuring what each car retained after more than 100,000 km, roughly 62,000 miles. When they broke the Model 3 down by pack, the spread was striking.

That is a five-point gap between the best and worst versions of the same car, at the same mileage. As reported by InsideEVs, the cheaper LFP chemistry outlasted every nickel-based pack in the dataset, which is the opposite of what most buyers assume about a premium battery.
For longer horizons there is less data, but Tesla's own impact reporting puts Model 3 and Model Y retention around 85 per cent at 200,000 miles. Treat that as the manufacturer's figure rather than an independent one.
So where does a Model 3 reading 82 per cent at 65,000 miles sit? Below every variant average in that study, by six points against the closest one. That is worth investigating rather than accepting, and it is not automatically bad news, for the reason below.
Why the number you are reading might be wrong
Every figure quoted in those threads comes from the battery management system's own estimate of usable capacity. That estimate is calibrated by observing the pack across a wide state-of-charge range.
If a car has spent months living between 50 and 80 per cent, which is precisely what good charging advice tells owners to do, the BMS has had very few opportunities to check itself against the top and bottom of the range. The estimate can then sit well off the mark while still looking perfectly confident.
I watched a Model X read 89.9 per cent and land near 83 after one deep cycle. Same pack, same week. It runs the other way too, with cars reading low and recovering several points after a full charge and a long drive.
For anyone about to argue price off a single reading, on either side of the table, that is a real risk in both directions. I went through the mechanics in why a tracking app said 89.9 per cent and the real figure was 83.
Your warranty depends on your trim, and most people get this wrong
This is the detail that changes negotiations, and it is trim-specific rather than model-specific.
Whichever limit arrives first ends the cover. Four things follow from that, and they matter to both sides.
The warranty transfers. Remaining cover follows the car to the next owner when ownership is properly transferred with Tesla. For a buyer, that is a real asset with a calculable value. Check the in-service date, not the build year.
Seventy per cent is a floor, not a promise. Gradual loss above that threshold is explicitly not a defect, however much you dislike the range. Almost no Model 3 gets near 70 per cent inside the warranty window.
A successful claim does not get you a new pack. Tesla may repair at module level or fit a pack that itself sits above 70 per cent. Worth knowing before anyone treats the warranty as a free replacement.
Tesla judges capacity with its own diagnostics, not the range figure on your dash. The warranty text is quoted in full on Tesla Motors Club if you want the exact wording for your build year.
Which pack you have is the single most useful thing to establish
Given that five-point spread, working out which pack a car has tells you more than its odometer does. The trim badge is only a rough guide, because supply varies by production batch and build location.
Build location matters as much as trim. Shanghai-built rear-wheel-drive cars from around 2021 onward use the CATL lithium iron phosphate pack. Earlier California-built Standard Range cars used a Panasonic nickel pack instead, despite sitting at the same point in the range, which is why the two lowest rows of that table are both nickel. Long Range and Performance cars are nickel throughout, with the supplier depending on where the car was built.
The distinction matters beyond the benchmark. LFP handles regular charging to 100 per cent without the same concerns, and Tesla recommends exactly that at least weekly so the BMS can calibrate.
That last point explains a pattern worth knowing. LFP cars charged only to 80 per cent, by owners applying nickel-pack advice to the wrong chemistry, are among the most likely to be showing a stale figure. Which means the variant with the best measured retention is also the one most likely to be reading below its true capacity.
To check which you have: Controls, then Software, then Additional Vehicle Information, and read the high voltage battery line. Faster tell at the charger, LFP cars typically show tick marks at 50 and 100 per cent on the charge limit slider, while nickel cars show a shaded daily band around 70 to 90 and a separate trip zone.

Your problem is not the number. It is that nobody can check it.

Neither produces anything a stranger has reason to believe, because the reading lives on your phone and you are the one holding it. Four things, in order.
Ask for the trim, the in-service date and where the car was built. Trim gives you the warranty window, and build location is what actually decides the chemistry. A Long Range at 90,000 miles still has cover to 120,000. A Standard Range at the same odometer is nearly out.
Ask what the car reads, and how it has been charged. A seller who says 88 per cent and mentions daily 50 to 80 charging has just told you the figure may be stale. That is not evasion, it is useful context.
Ask for something you can verify yourself. A screenshot is not evidence. A VIN-locked certificate with a public verification link is. If the seller has not got one, they can get one, and it costs less than the discount you are about to argue for.
Do not price a car on one reading. Especially not one taken after months in a narrow charge band. If the number looks low for the mileage, a wide cycle may move it several points before you have finished negotiating.
