How Much Does an EV Battery Health Check Cost? Every Option Compared (2026)
An EV battery health check costs anywhere from nothing to well over $300, and the spread is not really about accuracy. It is about three things: who will believe the answer, how long you are prepared to wait, and whether you are willing to put hardware in the car.
Get those three straight and the price question answers itself. A free number on your own phone is useful for you and worthless to a buyer. A week-long test with a device wired into your Tesla is the most thorough option available and useless if you are meeting a buyer on Saturday.
Here is what every option costs, how long it takes, and what you actually get for it.

The free options, and what they actually prove
Every modern EV estimates its own state of health, and some will show you. Tesla has a test in the app and in service mode. In the US, Recurrent monitors connected cars for free, reading battery data through onboard telematics several times a day with the owner's permission, and produces a report after about a week.
Run these. They cost nothing and they tell you roughly where you stand.
One distinction matters if you are a buyer. A Recurrent report on a car whose owner has connected it is built from that car's own streamed data. A Range Score sitting on a used listing at Cars.com or Edmunds is a different thing: Recurrent's own materials note that their models often do not need to study an individual car to generate a score, and the baseline is the range their fleet observed when those cars were new rather than that particular pack's original capacity. That is useful context and it is not a measurement. Recurrent evidently agrees, because dealers who physically inspect a car get a separate "Range Verified" label added to the report. A score without that label has not been verified on the car.
The problem is not accuracy, it is provenance. Your buyer cannot tell whether a screenshot is real, recent, or even from the car in front of them. A free result answers your question and does nothing for theirs, which is why sellers who lead with one still get the battery haggle.
There is a second issue people underestimate. These estimates drift. If a car has spent months charging in a narrow band, the battery management system has had few chances to calibrate against the top and bottom of the range, and the figure it reports can sit well off the mark in either direction until a wide cycle settles it. I have seen a Model X report 89.9 per cent and land near 83 after one deep cycle, same pack, same week.
The cheap paid options
A registration-based report. In the UK, EV All Day sells a £9.99 report built on ClearWatt data, generated from a registration number and current mileage against DVSA records. Fast, and genuinely useful for screening listings before you drive across the country to see one.
Understand what it is. It estimates what a car of that model, age and mileage is likely to be holding. It is not a reading from that particular vehicle. Two identical cars with very different charging histories get similar reports. For sorting a shortlist that is fine. For committing money on one specific car, it is a starting point rather than an answer.
An OBD dongle. Around $50 and reusable. It reads real data from the car, which puts it ahead of an app estimate, and it is worth knowing what testing without a dongle does and does not give you.
But the dongle sits in a port you control, running software you chose, producing a number you present. From a buyer's side that is structurally identical to your word.
ClearWatt. Hardware-free, UK only, backed by the Department for Transport and recommended by Auto Trader. They sell an app-based battery health check and a fuller EV Check Plus report bundling battery health with finance, MOT history and valuation. Pricing has moved since launch, so check their site. If you want vehicle history in the same purchase, it is a sensible buy.
The middle: a certificate a buyer can check themselves
This is where EV TrustSeal sits, and it exists for one specific problem. Not "what is my state of health," which free tools answer. The problem is proving it to someone who has no reason to trust you, without waiting a week or opening up your car.
You connect your manufacturer account through a read-only connection, drive until the pack is under 20 per cent, plug in to home AC and press Start Audit, then charge to at least 80 per cent in one session. The audit completes at 80 per cent and the car carries on charging, so there is nothing to stop or set. The system measures how much energy the battery actually delivered across that window rather than repeating the dashboard's estimate. Result within hours. Connecting is free and you pay the $99 or £79 only once your result is ready.
The certificate is VIN-locked with a QR code resolving to a public verification page. Your buyer verifies it without contacting you, and cannot be shown an edited PDF.
Coverage is the honest limitation. In Australia, coverage is Tesla and Polestar. In the US, UK and Canada it extends to 46 brands including Hyundai, Kia, Volvo, Ford, Chevrolet, Rivian, Volkswagen, Nissan and BYD. If your car is not on that list, one of the other options here is your answer, not mine.
Aviloo, and where the real difference sits
Aviloo is the most established name in independent battery testing, and being precise about their two products matters, because they are not interchangeable.
Aviloo Flash is what you can actually buy in these markets. Three minutes, no driving, ordered through a dealer or tester rather than directly. From $175 in Australia through Test EV's network of testers, £95 RRP in the UK through partners like MotorCheck. Because it reads through the OBD port it sees individual cell voltages and benchmarks your result against a very large test database. Aviloo states a maximum deviation of ±3 per cent in at least 95 per cent of reference measurements.
If you want cell-level anomaly detection or comparison against similar cars, that depth is real and I do not match it. The full Aviloo comparison covers where each one fits.
Aviloo PREMIUM is a different proposition, and worth knowing about even though you probably cannot buy it. TÜV-certified, usable as evidence in a legal dispute, and typically around €99 in the EU countries where it is sold. You are shipped a box, charge to 100 per cent to start, then have a week to get down to about 10 per cent, and return the device afterwards. It needs the OBD port, which on a Tesla means WhichEV's reviewer removing a plastic panel in the rear console and splicing in a Y-cable to expose a port Tesla does not provide.
It is a better test than mine on depth, and I will say that plainly. It is also EU-only, takes about a week, and involves dismantling part of your interior. Aviloo's own site still lists a "why is the PREMIUM Test not available in my country" question, and WhichEV notes it cannot be ordered in the UK largely because of post-Brexit shipping.
Aviloo has also gone somewhere nobody else has. Since July 2026 they offer a UK battery warranty, independently underwritten, built on a Flash Test result, paying £2,700 plus a refund of the test cost if state of health drops below the guaranteed threshold within the year. That is a test turned into an insurance product, and it is the most interesting development in this market right now.
The workshop end
$250 to $350 in Australia, $150 to $300 at a US dealer, often over £200 at a UK main dealer. Credible, thorough, and it requires a booking and half your day. An independent EV-specialist pre-purchase inspection runs $150 to $250 in the US and covers the whole car rather than just the pack, which is often what a buyer actually needs.
So which one should you pay for?

You are screening listings from your couch. In the UK, £9.99 for a registration-based report is the cheapest useful filter. Elsewhere, ask the seller what their app says and treat it as a starting point.
